Biology looks like the science you can pass by reading the textbook. It is not. Modern biology papers are full of unfamiliar experiments, data tables and graphs, and the marks go to students who can apply what they know to a situation they have never seen. A student who has memorised the whole book can still come out with a C because their answers are not specific enough for the mark scheme.
Mr. Ahmad’s biology lessons have three parts. The content, taught as processes and mechanisms rather than lists. The exam language: the exact terms the mark scheme wants and the difference between “describe”, “explain” and “evaluate”. And the data skills that now make up a large share of every paper: reading graphs, calculating rates and percentages, statistical tests, and criticising experimental design.

Frequently asked questions
My child revises a lot for biology but the grades do not move. What is going wrong?
Usually the revision is memorising, and the exam is applying. We shift the balance towards past-paper questions, marked against the real mark scheme, so the student learns what a full-mark answer looks like and starts writing that way.
Do you cover the maths and statistics in biology?
Yes. Percentages, rates, magnification, standard deviation, chi-squared and the t-test are all taught properly, which is a real advantage of having a tutor who also teaches maths.
Can you help with the IB Biology IA?
Yes: choosing a realistic investigation, collecting and processing data, and writing the analysis and evaluation to the criteria.
