AP Biology is a course about scientific reasoning as much as biological facts. The exam is built around four “science practices” — concept explanation, visual representations, questions and methods, and statistical analysis — and the free-response questions ask students to design experiments, interpret data and justify predictions in writing. Students who prepare only by learning content usually plateau at a 3.
Mr. Ahmad’s AP Biology lessons follow the course and exam description unit by unit, practise the released FRQs with their official scoring guidelines, and give proper attention to the quantitative side: percent change, rates, chi-squared, standard error and the graphs that appear throughout the exam. Lessons can run alongside the school course all year or as a focused review programme in the spring.
How AP Biology is assessed
- Section I: Multiple choice — 60 questions in 90 minutes, including sets based on data and experiments.
- Section II: Free response — 6 questions in 90 minutes: 2 long (interpreting and evaluating experimental results) and 4 short.
- Calculator and formula sheet — a four-function calculator and the AP Biology equations and formulas sheet are allowed.
- Scoring — 1 to 5; free-response points are awarded for specific, justified statements, not general descriptions.

- Unit 1: Chemistry of life — water, macromolecules, nucleic acids
- Unit 2: Cell structure and function — organelles, membranes, transport, water potential
- Units 3–4: Cellular energetics; cell communication and cell cycle — enzymes, respiration, photosynthesis, signalling, feedback, mitosis and regulation
- Units 5–6: Heredity; gene expression and regulation — meiosis, Mendelian and non-Mendelian genetics, chi-squared, DNA replication, transcription and translation, regulation, biotechnology
- Unit 7: Natural selection — evidence for evolution, Hardy-Weinberg, phylogeny, speciation, origin of life
- Unit 8: Ecology — behaviour, energy flow, population and community ecology, biodiversity, disruptions to ecosystems
