Biology at GCSE and IGCSE is often treated as the “easy” science, and then the results come in. The papers are long, the content is wide, and a large share of the marks now go to applying knowledge to unfamiliar experiments and data: reading graphs, calculating percentage change or rates, describing patterns, and evaluating methods. Students who revise by re-reading notes are underprepared for exactly this.
Mr. Ahmad’s GCSE and IGCSE Biology lessons split the work into three: content taught as processes, exam language taught from the mark scheme, and data skills practised every lesson. Lessons follow the student’s exact specification — Edexcel IGCSE (4BI1), Cambridge IGCSE (0610/0970), AQA GCSE (8461) or Edexcel GCSE — and use only that board’s questions.
How GCSE and IGCSE Biology are assessed
- Edexcel IGCSE (4BI1) — Paper 1B (2 h) and Paper 2B (1 h 15 min); Double Award students sit Paper 1B only.
- Cambridge IGCSE (0610) — multiple choice, theory and a practical or alternative-to-practical paper; Core or Extended.
- AQA GCSE (8461) — two 1 h 45 min papers, Foundation or Higher; Combined Science covers biology in two shorter papers.
- Maths in biology — at least 10% of marks: percentages, ratios, magnification, rates, graphs and simple statistics.
