IB Maths Tutor: Analysis & Approaches and Applications & Interpretation

One-to-one IB Mathematics tuition for AA SL, AA HL, AI SL and AI HL, taught by Mr. Ahmad, an IB maths specialist. Online for students at IB schools anywhere in the world, and in person in Dubai.

IB Mathematics is not one course but four, and the differences matter. AA HL is a demanding pure-maths course with proof, calculus and complex numbers; AI SL is built around modelling, statistics and technology; and a student who is being taught AI content in an AA style, or vice versa, wastes time. Mr. Ahmad has taught all four courses since the current syllabus was introduced and plans lessons for the exact course the student is sitting.

IB questions are also written differently from A-Level or AP questions. They are longer, they chain several ideas together, and the later parts depend on interpreting the earlier ones. Lessons therefore spend a lot of time on how to read an IB question, what “hence” and “show that” require, how to use the graphic display calculator properly on Paper 2, and how to present working so that method marks are awarded even when the final answer slips.

How IB Maths is assessed

  • Paper 1 — no calculator (90 min SL / 120 min HL). Tests algebraic fluency, exact answers and proof.
  • Paper 2 — calculator required (90 min SL / 120 min HL). Tests GDC skills: graphing, solving, regression, distributions.
  • Paper 3 (HL only, 60 min) — two long problem-solving questions that explore an unfamiliar situation step by step.
  • Internal Assessment (20%) — the mathematical exploration, marked on presentation, communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics.

Syllabus topics covered

  • Topic 1: Number and algebra — sequences, logarithms, binomial theorem, proof (HL: complex numbers, induction, systems of equations)
  • Topic 2: Functions — transformations, quadratics, rational and exponential functions, modelling (HL: polynomials, factor and remainder theorems, modulus)
  • Topic 3: Geometry and trigonometry — radians, identities, equations, 3D geometry (HL: vectors, lines and planes, compound angles)
  • Topic 4: Statistics and probability — descriptive statistics, regression, probability, binomial and normal distributions (HL: Bayes, continuous random variables; AI HL: Poisson, hypothesis tests, transition matrices)
  • Topic 5: Calculus — differentiation, integration, kinematics, optimisation (HL: related rates, implicit differentiation, Maclaurin series, differential equations)
  • AI-specific: modelling, matrices, graph theory, voronoi diagrams, spreadsheets and technology-based problem solving

How Mr. Ahmad teaches IB Maths

  • A diagnostic in the first lesson to check the algebra and functions foundations that every IB topic relies on
  • Lessons that follow the student’s school sequence, so tuition supports class work rather than competing with it
  • Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions practised separately, because the skills are different
  • GDC training on the TI-Nspire or Casio fx-CG50, including the functions most students never learn
  • IA guidance: choosing a topic, structuring the exploration, meeting each criterion
  • Timed past papers and mark-scheme review in the months before May or November exams

Why students work with Mr. Ahmad

  • 13+ years of one-to-one tutoring across British, IB, American, SABIS and Australian curricula
  • Exam-focused: every lesson is built around what the mark scheme rewards, not just what the textbook says
  • Online lessons that actually work: iPad and digital whiteboard on Zoom or Google Meet, so you see every line of working
  • Lesson notes and worksheets after each session, so the student has something to revise from
  • Flexible timing across time zones, including evenings and weekends

How lessons work

  1. Trial lesson at 50% off. A first full lesson at half price, to see where the student is and how we work together.
  2. Plan. We map the syllabus against the exam date and agree what to cover, in what order.
  3. Weekly lessons. One-to-one, usually 60 or 90 minutes, with homework set from past-paper questions.
  4. Exam run-in. Timed papers, mark-scheme review, and a checklist of the mistakes that cost marks.

    Frequently asked questions

Do you teach both AA and AI?

Yes, at SL and HL. The courses share some content but are assessed very differently, and lessons are planned for the specific course the student is taking.

Can you help a student decide between AA and AI, or SL and HL?

Yes. After a trial lesson Mr. Ahmad can give an honest view of which course fits the student’s strengths and university plans.

Do you help with the IB Maths IA?

Yes. Support covers choosing a suitable topic, planning the exploration and checking it against the five criteria. The mathematics and the writing are the student’s own.

My school is in a different time zone. Does that work?

Yes. Mr. Ahmad teaches IB students online across Europe, Asia and the Middle East, with lesson times fixed around the student’s school day.
